How to Brew the Perfect Cup
Share
Whether you're a coffee newbie or a seasoned sipper, brewing the perfect cup is an art — and we're here to help you master it. At Ghost Roast, we believe great coffee starts long before it hits your mug. Here's how to get it right every time.
1. Start with Fresh, Quality Beans
The foundation of a great cup is great coffee. Our single-origin beans — like our Honduras from the mountains of Marcala or our wild Papua New Guinea — are small-batch roasted to preserve their unique character. Always buy whole beans and grind just before brewing for maximum freshness.
2. Use the Right Water Temperature
Water that's too hot will over-extract your coffee, making it bitter. Too cool and you'll get a flat, underwhelming cup. The sweet spot? 195–205°F (90–96°C) — just off the boil. Let your kettle rest for 30 seconds after boiling and you're good to go.
3. Nail Your Grind Size
Grind size matters more than most people realize. Here's a quick guide:
- Coarse grind — French press, cold brew
- Medium grind — drip coffee, pour-over
- Fine grind — espresso, Moka pot
Our Max Caf Blend is available in every grind type, so you're always covered.
4. Get Your Ratios Right
The golden ratio for coffee is 1:15 to 1:17 (coffee to water by weight). That's roughly 1 gram of coffee per 15–17ml of water. For a standard 12oz mug, aim for about 20–22 grams of coffee.
5. Don't Forget Your Tea
Brewing tea is just as nuanced. Steep times and temperatures vary by type:
- Black tea (like our English Breakfast): 3–4 minutes at boiling
- Herbal tea (like Hibiscus Berry or Mango Treat): 5–7 minutes at boiling
- Rooibos (like Apple Cider Rooibos): 6–8 minutes — it won't go bitter!
